Background:
Central Piedmont Community College

CPCC is requesting $30 million in a Mecklenburg County bond referendum on Tuesday, November 6, 2007. These bond dollars will finance the next phase of the College's strategic plan to expand access to CPCC education for the community. Specifically, the funds will be used to replace the 40-year old Van Every building and renovate the Citizens Center on our main campus.

It's Accessible: CPCC serves more than 70,000 people on its six campuses throughout Mecklenburg County offering a comprehensive array of classes at convenient times, as well as a host of online courses.

It's Affordable: CPCC provides high value at a fraction of the cost of a four-year institution. CPCC full-time students typically attend a year of college for $1,500. CPCC Basic Skills classes, including English as a Second Language classes, are free.

It's Highly Respected: CPCC has won numerous national awards for high-quality programs and instruction. The College is a member of the prestigious League for Innovation in the Community College, a consortium of 20 of the nation's finest two-year colleges.

It's Responsive: CPCC is innovative and entrepreneurial, offering programs and services that match high-demand business needs. CPCC uses the latest classroom technology, offers many E-Learning opportunities, and trains for high-tech careers.

It's Accountable: According to the North Carolina Community College System Accountability Measures, CPCC students and employers rated the College high. Below are some of the results:

  • 99.6% of CPCC students are employed within one year after graduation.
  • 98% of students are satisfied with overall quality of academic programs at CPCC.
  • 100% of employers are satisfied with the preparation of CPCC graduates to enter the workforce.

Key projects supported by the 2005 bond:
  • New culinary arts facility on Central Campus
  • Rehabilitation to parking decks on Central Campus
  • Expansion of the construction trades facilities at Harper Campus
  • Expansion of the dental assisting facilities at Harris Campus (formerly West Campus)
  • Renovations to the Taylor Building and Pease Auditorium on Central Campus
  • Renovations to the visual arts facility on Central Campus

CPCC offers 10,000 different classes each year, with more than 2,100 faculty and staff. As the largest community college in North Carolina, CPCC offers 100 degree, diploma, and certification programs, customized corporate training, market-focused continuing education, and special interest classes.

The College is diverse with students representing over 161 countries.

CPCC serves more than 3,000 businesses through Corporate and Continuing Education (CCE).
40% of CPCC students take college credit classes; 40% take job enhancement and certification classes; and 20% take literacy, adult high school, and English as a Second Language classes.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, only 22% of the nation's jobs require a bachelor's degree or higher, but 75% of the nation's jobs require training by community or technical colleges.
