Bond referenda on the November 6 ballot:

$516 million for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools

Build new schools and expand others in high growth areas, and renovate older schools across the county

  • $290 million to build eight new elementary schools, two middle schools and two high schools.
  • $196 million to renovate or expand 14 schools.
  • $30 million to buy land for future schools.
  • Includes total of 40 new construction and renovation projects.
  • Will add 704 classrooms and provide relief to 25 of the district’s most overcrowded schools.
  • In recent years, CMS enrollment has grown by more than 5,000 students annually.
  • Many buildings are a half a century old or more.

$30 million for Central Piedmont Community College

Replace 40-year old Van Every Building and renovate the Citizen’s Center, adding a videography lab, TV station and more classrooms and office space

  • $25 million to replace the 40-year old Van Every Building on Central Campus , which no longer meets the needs of the learning environment. The new building would house information technology support services, as well as provide classrooms, labs, offices, and other space for advanced technologies studies and general curriculum courses.
  • $5 million to renovate the Citizens Center. The building currently houses the Culinary Arts Program, which will be relocated when the new facility opens in 2009-2010. Citizens Center will need to be renovated for different uses, which includes plans for an updated videography laboratory, general classrooms and offices, and operational support space for the television station.
  • This fall, CPCC class registrations were up nearly 15 percent.
  • Enrollment growth has outpaced many community colleges across the state. Last year, CPCC saw a four percent enrollment increase, compared to a 1.2 percent statewide.

$35.6 million for county land purchasing

  • Protect water quality by preserving land along Mountain Island Lake
  • Expand Little Sugar Creek and McAlpine Greenways
  • Expand Reedy Creek nature preserve
  • Locate a new library branch in Steele Creek area
